Think emerald islands wrapped in deep-blue channels—and a front-row seat to one of nature’s great gatherings. Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve famous for Hanifaru Bay, where manta rays swirl in their hundreds and whale sharks occasionally cruise through when plankton blooms align. It’s conservation-forward, photogenic, and wildly memorable—perfect whether you’re here for gentle snorkels, big-blue encounters, or barefoot-luxury downtime.

Why it’s special

  • UNESCO status (since 2011): protects world-class reefs, wildlife, and local livelihoods.

  • Hanifaru Bay rules keep it pristine: tightly managed by the Maldives Environmental Protection Agency; snorkelling only, guided and time-limited.

Getting in & around

  • Fly into Velana International Airport (MLE), then choose the easiest hop to Baa:

    • Seaplane – the scenic classic, usually ~30 minutes to central Baa resorts; seaplanes run daylight-only and the standard baggage allowance is 25 kg total (20 kg checked + 5 kg hand).

    • Domestic flight to Dharavandhoo (DRV) + short speedboat – great for late arrivals and Hanifaru-side islands; DRV sits next to the manta corridor with frequent Maldivian services from Malé.

We’ll match your flight times to the smoothest route, so your first sunset happens on the beach—not in transit.

Best Time to Visit

Baa is year-round, but manta magic follows the plankton:

  • Hanifaru Bay manta season: roughly May–Nov, with biggest aggregations often Jul–Oct/Aug–Oct when SW-monsoon currents funnel plankton into the bay. Whale sharks appear occasionally in the same window.

  • Good-to-know: Hanifaru is snorkelling-only; rangers enforce time limits, licensed-guide access, and spacing so animals aren’t stressed.

Unmissable experiences

  • Hanifaru Bay snorkel (seasonal): guided, time-limited sessions among feeding mantas; no diving in the bay by regulation.

  • Manta “cleaning station” watching: nearby reefs (outside the bay) often host graceful loops in shallow water—dreamy for newer divers and photographers.

  • Signature Baa dives: classic thilas and channels on non-Hanifaru days; visibility and current vary with monsoon—ask us to match sites to your comfort and certification.

FAQ – Baa at a glance
