Think calm lagoons, postcard sandbanks, and big-blue encounters on repeat. Alif Dhaalu—South Ari Atoll—is the Maldives’ most reliable place to meet whale sharks year-round, thanks to the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) that runs along the atoll’s outer reef from Dhigurah to Maamigili. Add in classic manta “cleaning stations” like Rangali Madivaru (Manta Point) and you’ve got an ocean lover’s dream, whether you’re snorkelling, learning to dive, or chasing that perfect photo.
Who it’s perfect for: wildlife-first travellers, honeymooners who want quiet lagoons and house-reef snorkels, families mixing easy beach days with gentle adventures, and divers who want marquee sites like Kudarah Thila and Broken Rock on the logbook. (Kudarah Thila has been nationally protected since 1995—for good reason.)
Fly into Velana International (MLE), then choose the smoothest hop to South Ari:
Seaplane – the scenic choice, typically ~25–30 minutes to central South Ari. Seaplanes operate in daylight only and generally allow 25 kg total (20 kg checked + 5 kg hand). If you land after mid-afternoon, consider the domestic route below.
Domestic flight to Maamigili (VAM) + short speedboat – ideal for late arrivals or islands in the SAMPA corridor. VAM is South Ari’s local hub (Flyme), with nearby islands just a quick boat ride away.
Pro tip: We’ll align your flight times to the best transfer so your first sunset is on the beach—not in transit.
South Ari is a year-round destination—pick your month by focus:
Whale sharks: seen throughout the year along the SAMPA fringe from Dhigurah to Maamigili; studies point to consistent aggregation in this nursery-like seascape.
Manta rays: Rangali Madivaru (Manta Point) lights up in NE-monsoon months (roughly Dec–Apr) when cleaning stations are most active (shallow 8–20 m = long, easy sessions).
Whale-shark snorkel (SAMPA): briefings cover respectful spacing and no-touch rules so the magic—and the animals—stay protected.
Manta ballet at Rangali Madivaru: shallow, photogenic loops above a classic reef shoulder—iconic South Ari.
Signature dives: Kudarah Thila (arches, soft corals, schooling fish—protected since 1995), plus favourites like Broken Rock and Maamigili Corner when currents run.
Seaplanes fly sunrise–sunset (aim to land by ~15:30 for same-day). For evening flights, we route via VAM + speedboat.
Typically 25 kg total (20 kg checked + 5 kg hand); excess is charged per kg by the operator.
Resorts = standard beachwear; local islands = bikini beach only for swimwear, modest clothing elsewhere. (We’ll flag which islands have official bikini beaches.)
It’s a protected site with dramatic topography and rich life—a South Ari must-do for qualified divers.
Tell us your dates, nightly budget, and must-haves (whale sharks, mantas, house-reef, family facilities, photography goals). We’ll match you to the right resort, guesthouse, or liveaboard, line up seaplane or VAM connections, and secure ethical SAMPA outings—so every day leans into the ocean, not logistics.
